Of course almost all those 'reasons' are non-sensical. For me, the main issue I think (look Im even doubting myself here) is that I reject God in no small way because I want to be good. That is, I want to lead a life that is based in treating others well, being tolerant, accepting, understanding, caring, compassionate and so on. Having read parts of the Bible, and listend to people like William Lane Craig talk, I am appalled at the things Christians think are OK to do. I could not gloss over evil stuff by saying that God thought it was ok for me to do things, like applauding the slaughter of innocents in the Bible. That stuff is bad and I find I cannot support any deity who does that sort of thing. Not a sophisticated answer I know.
Hi. Thanks. Look I think it was one of the so called new atheists who said that for ordinary people to do really evil things requires religion. I think that’s a bit extreme, look at Fascism or Communism for example. It may be for ordinary people to do great evil requires a philosophy that seeks to control every aspect of their lives- religion is one of those.
A friend of mine said, if you come across a village of people who have all been killed, men, women, children, babies- well the first question to ask is ‘who did it’? If it was God, then move on, nothing wrong here. If it is other humans then it’s ’oh This is monstrous’.
