Welcome to The Ex-Christian Observer: a weekly newsletter from a former Christian unpacking the madness that is evangelical Christian America.
If you want to support my work and help me push back against Christian nationalism, consider upgrading to a paid subscription!
One of my favorite newsletters is The 3-2-1 Newsletter from James Clear.
It’s simple. It’s clean. It’s digestible. It’s valuable.
So, I’m going to shamelessly do my own version of his newsletter today!
It’s time for 4-3-2-1:

Do they honestly think I would talk about Christianity if it would leave us alone?
Atheism is a response.
Me making the content I do is a response.
A response to THEIR actions. THEIR words.
I was an atheist for 10+ years before I ever talked about it publicly or with most of the people I know.
Hmm. Wait a minute. Are atheists the ones yelling at women who are going into abortion clinics to get advice and make hard decisions?
Are atheists the ones yelling to people on the street corner that they’re going to hell?
They tell us that we will be tormented for eternity unless we conform to their idea of what god is.
Laughable.
I made a post about Christians who worship Trump.
I didn’t say that all Christians worship Trump.
I didn’t say that all people who voted for Trump are worshippers of him.
But, boy, they sure have a hard time comprehending anything.
People like happy_days1227 is exactly why we have to stand up to Christian nationalism.
This reminds me of the rant that Clark goes on at the end of Christmas Vacation.
I have no brain, yet my brain is washed. Interesting.
3 Things You Should Know About
NaNoCon
NaNoCon is the Nashville Nones Convention, and it’s on July 26th.
NaNoCon is a gathering for all of us happy heathens living in the Bible Belt. We do it in Tennessee because Nashville is awesome, and because, well, here’s where it started! There's typically not a lot here in the South for us non-religious types, so we figured we'd just have to start something ourselves.
Our first event was on March 5, 2016, and over 400 people showed up from a 6 state region, so we decided to keep it going. After our fifth successful in-person event in 2022 was completely sold out, now we're gearing up for NaNoCon 6 in 2025!
We call it the Nashville "Nones" Convention -- this refers to the answer people like us give on surveys when we're asked to select our religious preference, and we pick "None of the above." Turns out there are actually quite a lot of us... one in four, maybe more. In fact, according to the survey people at Pew Research, apparently we're one of the fastest-growing groups in the country. So, there might as well be something like this, by us and for us, to help us get connected.

Bad Faith
Bad Faith is a documentary on Amazon Prime (and other places) that talks about the history of Christian nationalism and how we got to where we are today.
BAD FAITH is a feature-length documentary that explores the dangerous rise of Christian Nationalism in the United States. Part archival chronicle, part exposé, the film reveals the secretive political machinery that has relentlessly sought to weaken and destroy American democracy in order to promote its authoritarian vision.
Our cast includes religious leaders, historians, investigative journalists, state senators, political activists, sociologists, and a former high-ranking member of the Trump administration. They will guide us on a revelatory journey into why our nation is so divided and how it got there. Several have dedicated their lives to challenging Christian Nationalism’s theocratic vision for America and the film chronicles their actions.

I’m going to be streaming on YouTube…a lot.
I started posting Jesus Unfollower content on Instagram in 2019. Soon after, I started posting YouTube videos (right around the time I lost my job & the pandemic started). I posted consistently for about a year and a half, and, for a while, I was going live on YouTube every week. I really enjoyed it.
But then I started getting worried that my new employer would find my channel and not like it (they were Christians), so I stopped posting as much to YouTube.
I have posted there some over the past few years, but it’s been sporadic.
Now, I’m going all-in on YouTube. I have lots of fun ideas for livestreams, and I hope you’ll join me there!
Going live Monday, Wednesday, and Friday at noon EST.

2 Quotes to Make You Think
“The essence of the independent mind lies not in what it thinks, but in how it thinks.”- Christopher Hitchens
“I love America more than any other country in the world and, exactly for this reason, I insist on the right to criticize her perpetually.”- James Baldwin
1 Thing to Remember
The burden of proof lies with the person making the claim. As much as theists ask us to prove that God isn’t real, that’s not on us. That’s like us asking them to prove that there aren’t pink elephants living within the core of a planet 28 galaxies away.
I do this to make people laugh, to process religious trauma, and to remind us all we’re not alone in this Christian nationalist hellscape.
If that’s worth a few bucks a month to you, I’d be honored.
